Description
The Rocky Mountain Arsenal is close to Denver; in fact, you can see the Denver skyline, along with the front range Rocky Mountains. I was a bit disconcerted as I drove through traffic on I-70 then through Commerce City. I am used to driving into wilderness, but for this drive, I felt like I was going to a mall to photograph. Okay, there was the sign for Rocky Mountain Arsenal, Wildlife Refuge, and as it turned out, the refuge was darn close to a huge mall! Disappointment flooded my veins! As I drove, I realized that once you get into the refuge, it is pretty remote and interesting. The Arsenal was supposedly one of the most polluted pieces of land on earth--a place where serine gas was made, along with other extremely toxic wartime materials! As I turn the corner to park, I hear the call of many prairie dogs and the trail I begin my journey on is actually strait through a prairie dog town. This is just the beginning of the wildlife that thrives in this now healthy thriving habitat! Where there are prairie dogs, there are borrowing owls. other birds that inhabit this refuge include bald eagles and golden eagles, and various other small birds. There are also coyotes, fox, deer, and buffalo. In early summer, the park hosts many birding expeditions, including the baby borrowing owl expedition, which I am signed up for. Even though this little park is plopped right down in the middle of industrial Commerce City, it was worth the trip and a really valuable wildlife area!
