Artist's Description

Sandstone rocks abound in Colorado! I am always amazed at the color and shapes of these rocks. In this capture, the rocks were flat and not very high off of the ground so it was possible to hike over these rocks, and in fact they had to be crossed several times because they intersected the trail. Sandstone is a very soft rock so I try to avoid walking on these formations as much as possible! These rocks were filled with plant life and colorful lichen which added to the overall color! This capture was taken in late afternoon very close to sunset so the lighting brings out the earthy tones of the sandstone. Later in the hike, the clouds rolled in and the sky became quite dramatic! That's the West--one moment sunny skies, then changing to stormy rain and wind!

When I first photographed, I worked in film, and almost exclusively black and white. I did portraits then,...
